Ken O’Neil is the owner of Cakewalk Creations. Its new home on the busy El Camino is the former Burrito Express. O’Neil, a graduate of the California Culinary Academy, says the new location halfway between San Francisco and San Jose is perfect for his destination shop.
Cakewalk will open its bakery to the walk-in public January 6 but is currently taking custom orders. (When the LSS visited, O’Neil and his staff were busy. Very busy. Much of Cakewalk’s business is baking for wholesale accounts and corporate events.)
O’Neil says he’s heard that San Carlos has done without a good, all-around bakery for a long time (sorry, Safeway and Lucky’s don’t count) and he hopes to fill the void. “We’ll have French pastries, cakes, cookies, but we’ll be focusing mostly on cake.”
And not just any cake. “From Coach bags to cartoon characters, we’ll take anything on. If we can possibly imagine doing it, we’ll try it,” said O’Neil.
As for flavors, O’Neil says Cakewalk stretches beyond the usual suspects of vanilla and chocolate. “We like to do different flavors and different textures to enhance the cake. We want the cake to look good and taste good.”
Unlike Nothing Bundt Cakes, Cakewalk Creations is not part of a franchise. O’Neil says his bakery has a relationship with Vanilla Moon on Laurel. (Nothing Bundt Cakes is locally owned. Click here to read more)
Since Vanilla Moon isn’t set up to bake cakes, V.M. often refers cake orders to Cakewalk. And while O’Neil and his staff can make cupcakes, he sends people over to Vanilla Moon which specializes in the art of gourmet cupcakes baked daily.
O’Neil most recently ran a bakery called Patisserie Ganache in San Bruno for five years.
