More Time Needed To Solve Illicit Massage Biz Problem

San Carlos’ Chief of Police wants to extend the ban on new massage businesses.  The City Council is expected to make a decision Monday evening when meetings resume after a summer break.

Police staff asked for the original 45-day moratorium after noting a suspicious spike in the number of applications for massage therapy permits.

As the police report summed it up, “the underlying purpose of the majority of these requests is to engage in prostitution.”

Gregory Rothaus is asking the City Council to tack on an extra 10 months and 15 days to the ban. The time is needed to study changes in county and state laws that could help the city come up with new legislation that would help deal with the problem.

The goal is to come up new regulations that would crack down on illegal activity while allowing legitimate massage businesses to open or expand.
