Restaurant Kills Kabobs and Changes Concept, Totally

Bair Island Tap & Eatery, 635 Laurel Street, San Carlos (opening soon)

(Update: Opening Mon., 9/26 but check b/f you go) The Laurel Kabob is ditching its skewers in favor of craft brews, local wines and a simpler menu of gourmet sandwiches and fresh seasonal salads.

Co-owner Charles Evans says it was time to change the concept because there are just too many Mediterranean restaurants around.

With (Greek) Mythos and Turkish Grill Pilita across the street, not to mention Santorini and Mediterranean Delite not far away, Evans said, “it’s hard to rise out of the pumpkin patch.”

Evans hopes the new concept – dubbed Bair Island Tap & Eatery – will stand out in San Carlos.

While the menu is still a work in progress, it’ll focus on house made sausages and house smoked meats from local ranches, prepared by chef Hugene Kovacks, who’s worked at Piacere and Rumi.

Tap machine will serve beer AND wine (when it's set up)

To wash down sandwiches served on a ciabatta or potato roll (flavored with a nice selection of house made condiments and mustards), diners can choose between a number of local craft brews and wines, some available on tap.

Passersby may have got their first clue that something had changed at Laurel Kabob with the arrival of some very chunky/sturdy bench seating outside. All new tables – made from reclaimed wood – await inside, which is in the last stages of a fast and furious makeover.

If everything goes as planned, Bair Island is expected to open this Thursday, September 15th.

Looking forward to the opening of this restaurant! Love all the new places popping up on Laurel St. Wondering if it’ll be similar to The Refuge (in terms of food quality).

Once you try it…please let us know what you think about the food! One thing about new restaurants popping up in San Carlos: the bar is a lot higher than it used to be!

Sounds great, Betsey! I’d have been there had I known about event (some Spy!) as have weakness for all-things savory.
