New Era for SC Fire Department

A Sign of Change: A RC Fire Vehicle in front of SC Fire Station #13

On Saturday, the San Carlos Fire Department officially rolls out, operating under the management of Redwood City.

The shared services agreement between SC and RC marks the end of a contentious partnership between the cities of San Carlos and Belmont that together provided fire and emergency services under a Joint Powers Agreement (JPA).

San Carlos Assistant City Manager Brian Moura says about half of the new employees aren’t really new at all, but were hired from the JPA. The other half come from other Bay Area agencies, including San Mateo.

“The City has a surplus, so people are surprised to learn that we were hiring when other cities are reducing staff,” said Moura.

While the firefighters and paramedics will work for the City of San Carlos, they’ll be managed by Redwood City, which in August announced the hiring of new Deputy Fire Chief Stan Maupin.

Moura says the fire stations and trucks are ready to go (along with new uniforms for firefighters), complete with newly designed logos with the City of San Carlos seal in the middle.

The seal reads, “The City of Good Living.” One firefighter jokingly quipped, “Maybe it should be The City of Contracted Services.”

There will be a quick Swearing-In Ceremony, “honoring the appointment of the employees of the San Carlos Fire Department” on Saturday, October 1 at 7:30 525 Laurel Street.  Then it’s the beginning of a new era at 8 a.m.
