Under Contract: A Beloved White Oaks Institution

Window announcement at White Oaks Hardware Store

There’s nothing like Going Out of Business scrawled on the window of a San Carlos institution to make one slam on the brakes.

White Oaks Hardware – up for sale – is officially under contract after receiving multiple offers, according to listing broker Michelle Fraedrich of  Cornish & Carey Commercial.

Fraedrich says she can’t disclose the name of the buyer.  This will no doubt fuel speculation as to what’s in store for the building and the 5,000 square foot parcel next to it.

Some area residents are convinced the hardware store – an anchor on the south end of Laurel Street since the 1940′s – is destined to become a restaurant.

In May, Fraedrich said the unusually large property (7,500 sq. feet) at the corner of St. Francis, would “allow for expansion of the current building, or perhaps a parking lot for a restaurant or medical use.”

Rich Weber says he’s owned and managed the store since 1987.

However, Weber leased the building.  The current owners, according to Fraedrich, live out-of-state and inherited the property.

No official word from Mr. Weber on plans for the future.  (Hey, I tried, but all I came away with were some badly needed household cleaners at the going-out-of-business-discount)
